What is an Ampersand: &? An Ampersand is a sign for the word and. It is written or typed as the symbol &. The term is a modification of the term "and per se and" which has Latin origins. The ampersand was once part of the modern alphabet listed just before the letter Z. It was dropped from the alphabet in the 18th century. We learned our ABCs saying AND just before the Z. This is where the original &; symbol appeared. Try reciting the ABCs aloud and listen for the AND just before the Z!
